7 Types of Face Shapes

Do You Have a Round Face?

Do You Have a Round Face starts with the outer line of the face, not with one feature in the middle of it. A round face stays curved at the jaw and does not show a much greater length than width.

Seven outlines is the whole set used here: oval, round, square, heart, diamond, oblong, and triangle. The picture above is the pin for this guide. The same page is the link on the pins that belong with it.

How to read the outline

If you searched for “do I have a round face”, stay with the contour. Name the shape only after you can see where the face is long and where it is wide.

If the jaw corners turn sharply, square is the closer look. A square jaw is wide and angular, close to the width of the forehead, rather than a short curve into the chin.

That corner is the clue. Heart shape is a width story: the forehead leads and the chin narrows.

A pointed or small chin with a broader upper face is the pattern. Ask where the face is widest.

When two names both seem possible

Diamond means the cheekbones win, with a narrower forehead and jaw. If the jaw is the widest part instead, it is not diamond.

Extra length is the oblong clue, especially when the sides of the face stay fairly even. A little extra length still fits oval.

Triangle means the width sits low. The jaw leads and the forehead is narrower, which is the opposite of a heart shape.

On an oval face the length is gently greater than the width, the forehead is a bit wider than the jaw, and the chin curves. Nothing at the cheeks or jaw spikes outward.

Square anatomy is an even width from forehead to jaw plus clearer corners at the jaw. The outline looks structured rather than circular.

Diamond anatomy centers on the cheekbones. The forehead narrows above them and the jaw narrows below them, so the outline has a clear widest point in the middle.

Heart anatomy is a taper. The upper face holds the width and the chin finishes small, with a jaw that does not flare.

If the photo is tilted, take another one before you trust this check. If two outlines both seem close, look again at the chin and the jaw corners. That is usually where they split.

Take the photo straight

Use one photo, taken straight on, with the camera at eye level. Hair only needs to be clear of the hairline and the jaw. A tilt, a shadow on one cheek, or a chin that is lifted will change the outline before you have even started.

Look at the forehead, the cheeks, and the jaw as three widths. Then compare the length of the face with the width. That is the whole reading.

Common questions

Do You Have a Round Face?

A round face stays curved at the jaw and does not show a much greater length than width. If two outlines both seem close, look again at the chin and the jaw corners. That is usually where they split.

Is Your Face Longer Than It Is Wide?

Extra length is the oblong clue, especially when the sides of the face stay fairly even. Decide which area is widest before you say a shape name. The widest point is what starts the name.

How do I use “The Anatomy of a Heart-Shaped Face”?

Heart anatomy is a taper. Clear the hairline only enough to see where the forehead ends. You are tracing a contour.
